At the AGM the retiring chairman John Morison gave a talk on pilgrimage to Hallaton and the hilltop chapel of St Morrell and the research that led up to the discovery, all illustrated with some 80 slides.
The talk began with details of the family background of St Morrell in the 5th century and his period as bishop of Angers. Then the close ecclesiastical connection of Anjou and Normandy with England. John then described his historical research at the National Archives, Kew and at Lincoln that led up to the discovery of the site of a chapel at Hallaton. The talk was illustrated with many of the documents that helped shed light on the pilgrimage to Hallaton.
He concluded the talk with an analysis of the connection with Maxstoke Priory and the medieval tiled floor at both, with particular reference to the tile of the leaping stag.
The theme throughout the talk was that as well as digging in the ground, there is just as much information to be found and enjoyment to be had, by digging in the archives. They are two sides of the same coin.
